New Portable Wireless Reading Device - Amazon Kindle

May 25th, 2008 | by kelliw |

When I go home to visit my family, I usually take along several audio books to listen to in the car to help pass the time and to keep me awake. I have often gone to amazon.com to check out the audio books. But the last time I went there, I could hardly find any audio CDs. They had been replaced by a new technology.

Amazon.com has released a portable wireless reading device they call the Amazon Kindle. It sells for $399. That’s pretty steep.

On the Amazon web site, there are pictures of people sitting around reading their kindles. They hold them just like they would a book, so I asked myself what is the big deal? You might as well just hold a book.

“Don’t be so negative, Kel; check it out first,” I told myself. So I went and took a closer look and did find some nice advantages to the Amazon Kindle.

  • The Kindle is lighter and thinner than your average paperback book.
  • From anywhere, your car, your kitchen, your bathroom, you can access the Kindle store through your Kindle device to shop for books, newspapers, or magazines. There are over 120,000 books that can be read on the Kindle. Over 80% of the current New York Times bestsellers are available. You don’t have to get dressed and drive to the bookstore. And you don’t have to shop online and wait a week for delivery.
  • You can sample before you buy. Amazon will let you download chapter one of a book at no cost. This can help you decide if the book is right for you.
  • The bestsellers and new releases carry a price tag of around $9.99 and can be delivered in less than 60 seconds.
  • Several of the top newspapers, including the Wall Street Journal and several international newspapers, can be delivered to your portable wireless reading device.
  • You get free access to Wikipedia.
  • Over 300 of the top blogs are available to be delivered to your Amazon Kindle.
  • Two really nice features are the ability to adjust the font and bookmark your pages.

There are other features that you can check out on the Amazon web site. And they have many accessories for the portable wireless reading device, such as different colored skins and LED lamp lights.

Kindle: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device

It certainly sounds interesting. I cannot buy one right now. My family has had a lot of medical expenses lately that I have to pay off. But if you have an Amazon Kindle or are going to buy one, I would love to hear what you think about it. Please post your comments and let everyone know your opinion of this new portable wireless reading device.

Since you are considering the Kindle, I would suggest that you read Josh Quittner’s Users Guide. It is on page 54 of the July 28 vol.172 #4 issue of Time magazine. A good one page article.
P.S. Liked your automotive article. I am trying to start a blog on ways to save fuel myself.

Thank you Glen for your suggestion. I will have to try to track down that article about the Kindle. And good luck with your blog. We all need to figure out ways to cut back on fuel costs.
