Get Smart Stamping Out Starvation In Africa
May 8th, 2008 | by kelliw |Today, I learned that you can get smart while stamping out starvation in Africa and other poor countries. My daughter introduced me to a website, www.freerice.com . This site has information about how the countries of the world are working together to solve worldwide hunger problems. A goal for financial aid has been set for each country, but only six countries have met that goal so far. I am surprised and sad to say that the United States ranked at the bottom of the list for progress towards goal achievement.
But each individual can easily help stop starvation in Africa. The freerice.com web site has a vocabulary quiz game that you can play when you visit the web site. It is basically a multiple choice vocabulary quiz. You are given a vocabulary word and four possible definitions. If you choose the correct definition, you earn 20 grains of rice. There is no penalty for wrong choices. The rice you earn will be donated to help feed the poor. The money used to pay for the rice comes from advertisers who pay to have their ads on the freerice.com web site.
The web site also has letters addressed to the leaders of each country that you can download and mail. The letters will encourage each country to step up their progress in achieving the country’s goal. So you can improve your vocabulary while making an individual rice contribution to the cause. And you can also encourage your country’s group participation. Either action will lead us toward the goal of stamping out starvation in Africa and other needy areas.
